Herbert George (H. G.) Wells was an English writer and social theorist who correctly predicted the advent of space exploration and of atomic power. Wells wrote several scientific romances or fantasies before he was thirty, and his two early works, The Time Machine (1895) and The War of the Worlds (1898), helped define the science fiction genre. His themes of ecological disaster, the collapse of the world, and the insignificance of humanity have become common themes in science fiction literature.
Wells wrote several histories, analyses, and comic novels, but he is best remembered for his hugely popular The War of the Worlds, which brought Martians to England to terrify the natives with their technology and their lust for human blood.
